A MASSIVE clean up operation is underway in Newcastlewest following the worst flooding in the town in living history.
Millions of euro worth of damage was caused to buildings in the town when the River Arra broke its banks shortly after 1am.
"It is absolutely devestating, everything is destroyed and I don't know what I am going to do," said local auctioneer, Pat O'Donovan whose premises was one of the worst affected.
At its peak there was around three feet of water flowing along North Quay, South Quay and other adjacent streets.
A number of cars were caught up in the currents and witnesses described seeing them floating along the river channel. Flood news here
