Teptep the Baby Tree Kangaroo Peeks Out!

There’s a new celebrity at the St. Louis Zoo, who’s making brief public appearances!
ST. LOUIS (AP) —
"A tree kangaroo gave birth seven months ago to a baby who was then the size of a lima bean. Now, that joey is big enough to peek out from time to time from his mother’s pouch.

The baby is known as “Teptep,” named after a village in Papua New Guinea. The tree kangaroo is found only in the island’s thick mountainous forests.
Patient visitors may see Teptep briefly leave the pouch, before hopping back in. The joey is residing with his mother at the children’s zoo."

"Unfortunately... tree kangaroos are critically endangered in the wild. An arboreal species of kangaroo. Tree kangaroos live in tropical North Queensland in the canopy of the rainforest, and in Papua New Guinea, but due to habitat loss, their numbers are critically low.
Melb Zoo is taking place in a special breeding program, but this species is very difficult to sucessfully breed in captivity - only 33 of them live in Zoos world-wide."
