Deputy Bear

That's a good bear! Chasing out the criminals. :)

A deputy points at claw marks on a tree. Garfield County Sheriffs Department
Utah deputies joked about deputizing a black bear after the animal raided an illegal marijuana farm so often that the growers fled. Here, an official points out claw marks in a tree.

Black Bear Sends Pot Farmers Packing AP
PANGUITCH, Utah- One Utah community is cheering a special bear — but don't call him Smokey. Investigators say a large black bear raided a clandestine marijuana growing operation so often that it chased the grower away.

"This bear is definitely law-enforcement minded," said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins. "If I can find this bear I'm going to deputize him."
Deputies found food containers ripped apart and strewn everywhere, cans with bear teeth marks, claw marks and bear prints across the Garfield County camp on Tuesday.
Perkins said the operation on Boulder Mountain included 4,000 "starter" sacks of pot and 888 young plants.
"This particular bear apparently was not going to give up and basically chased these marijuana farmers away," Perkins said. "Our county is so tough on drugs that even the wildlife are getting in on the action." Source

Teddy Bear Phone Concept Is Too Cute for Words

Willcom recently presented its "Kuma Phone" (translates to "Bear Phone") concept at the 2008 Good Design Expo. The Kuma Phone is literally just that--a teddy bear that's also a mobile phone. The teddy bear can house your SIM card and can really be used to accept and make calls. Using it is actually as simple as placing the doll on your ears just like you would a conventional phone. In fact, you can even program up to four speed dial numbers on it--one for each paw. You just pinch a paw to activate internal sensors and call a number.

Puppy Scares 3 Bears From Backyard

Fearless Fur Ball!

He may not look fierce, but Pawlee, an 8-month-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix, scared off a mother bear and her two cubs who wandered into his owners' backyard Sunday in Wyckoff, N.J. The bears decided to vamoose when they heard Pawlee's furious barking

Puppy Scares 3 Bears From Backyard

WYCKOFF, N.J. (Aug. 25) - If only Goldilocks had a cockapoo.
"We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off," owner Fran Osiason said.
Osiason said her 9-year-old son, Jacob, went outside to see what the commotion was about and came running back in to report there were bears in the yard.
She was worried that the mother would come after Pawlee to protect her cubs, but the pugnacious pup, just 8 months old, had other plans.
His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods.
Osiason said she, her son, husband Andrew and daughter Eden, 6, have had Pawlee since he was about 8 weeks old. She marveled at his fearlessness.
"He's a little fur ball," she said.

Cow Chases off a Bear!

I guess you just don't go around stealing Apple the Cow's apples! She will be nice n'all but there is a limit! :)

Cow chases bear off property Animals met nose-to-nose
By Scott Rochat, Longmont Times-Call

HYGIENE — A bear got into Nancy Dayton’s apple tree Sunday evening. Thankfully, her trusty cow was on watch.

Yes, cow.

According to Dayton’s renters on Hygiene Road, her cow Apple touched noses with the young black bear before finally chasing it off.
“That’s one tough heifer, let me tell you!” Dayton said, laughing.
“If we could have gotten it on video ....” said Jack McDonald, one of Dayton’s renters.
McDonald was the one who discovered the bear around 5 p.m. when he heard noise outside.

“The squirrels were doing their chattering, and I thought one of the cats had caught a bird,” he said. “So I went to the apple tree. And he’s there. And I’m here. I went to Penny (Cox, a neighboring renter) and said ‘It’s a bear! It’s a bear!’”
According to Cox and McDonald, the bear had started to roam a little when Apple approached from a neighboring field. The two animals stared at each other, the bear even climbing the fence so it could get a better look at Apple.

“After they touched noses, the cow chased the bear to the apple tree,” McDonald said. “They hung out by the apple tree for a while And then the cow chased him to the fence. It was hilarious.”
The bear fled down the fence line, still pursued by Apple.
It’s only the second time that a bear has come on the property since Dayton purchased it 14 years ago. The last time, about five or six years back, a black bear was treed by a tenant’s Rhodesian ridgeback dogs.
Damage was minimal, Dayton said — just some broken branches and a bit of disturbed garbage from when the bear rooted in the trash bin for a moment.

“He wasn’t at all aggressive or anything,” said Cox. “He was just being a bear.” via

Panda Babies! Boost for China panda population

What we need are More Pandas!

Good news is, you gottem!

Boost for China panda population
News article here
Four giant panda cubs have been born within 14 hours in China, boosting the population of the endangered species.
The cubs were born at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre in south-west Sichuan province, state media reported.
A pair of female twins was born to nine-year-old Qiyuan late on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.
About an hour later, eight-year-old panda Chenggong gave birth to another cub, while Zhuzhu, also eight, gave birth on Sunday.

The giant panda is one of the world's most endangered species, because of the destruction of its forest habitat and lack of contact between isolated populations.
According to experts only about 1,600 pandas remain in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and neighbouring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
Another 180 pandas are being raised in captivity in China.

Lucky Grills, Iron Koala!

This is ONE TUFF KOALA!!!! So glad he is okay! "Lucky Koala" !! Superhero Koala!

Lucky Grills' escape has been described as "miraculous"

A koala has survived being hit by a car and then dragged for several miles with its head stuck in the vehicle's front grill, officials in Australia say.
They say the male koala was found with his bottom sticking out of the grill of a woman's car near Brisbane.
The animal was taken to a wildlife hospital in Queensland where tests showed it was not badly hurt.

The lucky creature - believed to be several years old - was nicknamed Lucky Grills after his ordeal.
The driver said she had noticed a koala on the road but drove on when she failed to see anything in her rear view mirror.
The trapped animal was only spotted when the driver pulled up at a railway station on the outskirts of Brisbane.

"Somehow the force of the impact propelled him through the grill. That sort of wedged him there. That is why he didn't come adrift. The rest of his body was dangling," spokeswoman Carolyn Beaton of the Australian Wildlife Hospital told the AFP news agency.

She added that "an examination showed that he was in good health and had no serious injuries".
