Have a Wonderful Memorial Day

I have been thinking quite a lot lately of "building" a new home. I have also built my share of paper houses and have saved the flattened remains of one I made many years ago, recently discovered, under a bunch of books. If you want to get crafty this holiday, I would recommend a paper house, might be a nice way to remember what a friend or loved one's home looked like, or recall your childhood dream home and bring it to life now. Hope you are having a great holiday!

Building A Paper House, via My Submarine to the Future, thank you Ohdeedoh, Apartment Therapy

I have one more day until I am officially "moved" too! :)

Denver's Angel, Cancer survivor, 9, funds support dog for 2-year-old

You will cry but happy tears. Children should never be underestimated, and a lot, A LOT, of adults could learn a lesson about what is important on this floating pebble in space.

Cancer survivor, 9, funds support dog for 2-year-old
By Kirk Mitchell, The Denver Post
"After two years of surgery, chemotherapy and treatment for a brain tumor, 9-year-old Allison Winn wanted other kids with cancer to have a companion like her dog, Coco.

"She made me feel better," Allison said.

So when she regained her strength at the end of spring, Allison embarked on a fundraising campaign of her own invention to pay for feeding and training companion dogs for kids like her.

On Tuesday, in the lobby of the women's prison where Coco and the new dog were trained, she watched quietly, but intently, as 2-year-old cancer survivor Krysta Hubbard caressed the nose of Lucky Bug, a gentle black Labrador. Krysta affectionately called him "Puppy."

She has also raised enough money to buy two more dogs and hopes to start a dog biscuit fundraising company.

A Life-sized Candyland

Yesterday an entire street turned into a real life Candyland! Lombard Street (you know that famous twisty turny one in San Francisco) got turned into a life sized version of the famous kid's boardgame.

To celebrate Candy Land's 60th anniversary, 575 feet of switchbacks in the Russian Hill neighborhood were transformed into a life-size version of the board game.

Kids from the UC San Francisco Children's Hospital and Friends of the Children competed in a round of Candy Land, which makes my girlhood fantasyland, FAO Schwarz, look like child's play.

Click here for all the info and a picture of the cute cake the kids got at the end of the game :)

MJ RIP

Back in the third grade our teacher said we were acting like animals when we danced around to this song. Our classmate Debbie (who was a trained child dancer and had been in a commercial) was onstage in the school talent review and as we later found out danced against her parents wishes to this song. All of us knew she could dance since she would practice on the playground. I wonder now if this was her secret to keep her parents from knowing she was teaching herself these modern animal (lol) dance moves. I remember her performance to this song so clearly to this day. Debbie I forget your last name now.. but I hope some Broadway star named Debbie is you. This was my first favorite Jackson 5 song, and the "era" of Michael I like to remember him in. Check out those robot moves, they really were ahead of their time. For all his flaws and scandals as he grew I choose to remember him like this, so talented and full of music and life. Rest in Peace Michael.

Banker Bails Out Baby Ducklings!

A kindly banker saves the day for the ducklings, and then he leads them to safety. Joel Armstrong took out valuable time from the falling economy to save tiny falling pieces of fluff. Click here for the dramatic footage, yes it's all on video (excuse the commercials it's worth the wait) and the entire story here. If Joel believes in karma, this banker is set for life.

Baby's First Fail

"We’re not saying children’s book editing is the easiest gig in the world but we wouldn’t let the brainiac in charge of this counting book pump our gas."

One, twooo, three, fooour, five umm five and a half five..? Maybe because two of them are small we are to assume children will combine them? Nice to know that some of the educational children's book market takes its mission seriously. Numerical and clip-art masterpieces like this are out there, sharing their unique brand of wisdom with your kids. Funny, yes, maddening.. more.

Dalki's Pretty "Pretend" Park

If you like the interaction of cartoon characters and the real world, like Disney World or even Chuckie Cheese, you might want to make a trip to Dalki's Theme Park in South Korea. It doesn't look as "animated" with dancing people, or machines dressed in costumes, but it's so pretty you might go even if there wasn't a theme. The colors and design are ethereal, childlike and set in a pretty green meadow. A sweet break from caverns of brick and asphalt! See all the pictures here.

"Dalki Theme Park is a place where imaginary creatures interact with human visitors in a real physical setting."
