Hero Bunny "Rabbit" Saves Family!

Pet Rabbit Saves Couple From Death In Fire

He doesn't have a very original name (he's a pet rabbit known as "Rabbit.") In fact, he doesn't appear to be very extraordinary at all. But this honey of a bunny is the toast of Australia, after saving his owners' lives in a fire.
It happened early Thursday morning in the city of Melbourne, when Gerry McLeod came home exhausted at the end of a night shift and went straight to bed.

About half an hour later, around 6am, he was awakened by the odd sound of a soft but frantic thumping near his bedroom door and reluctantly got up to investigate the cause. It was his pet rabbit, Rabbit, making the noise but that wasn't what got McLeod's attention. Instead he was startled to find part of his hallway filled with smoke and that a fire was blazing away in a back room - and spreading quickly.
Without much time, McLeod woke his wife, Michelle Finn, and they dashed out of the house to safety. And he admits if it hadn't been for his Bugs Bunny-like best friend he might not be here to tell the tale.
They pleaded with firefighters who arrived to go in and rescue the hero and the incredulous smoke eaters finally found the black bunny right in the line of fire - but miraculously unharmed. The house wasn't quite so lucky - it suffered extensive damage.

The couple had been renovating the place and the key smoke alarm that might have told them what was going on had been temporarily disconnected while the ceiling was being worked on.
Rabbit was penned up but made sure he made enough racket to wake the sleeping duo. "He is in his cage at night, which is in our lounge room," Finn explains. "He was just thumping around in his cage and he can be pretty boisterous when he wants to be."
The couple had been working on the reno project for two years and was just six days away from finally completing everything.

Michelle now plans to give her hero a special treat. "Some fruit I think," she muses, petting the adorable furball. "Some sweet stuff, just for now."
Investigators believe a heater may have sparked the fire and agree the rabbit not only saved their lives but allowed everyone to escape with nary a 'hare' being singed.
Investigators blame the fire on a faulty heater.
