The consoling arm of a good friend

If you have just had a big falling out with a colleague, there is nothing better than the comforting and consoling arm of a good friend.
Chimps, it seems, feel the same way, according to a study at Chester Zoo.
The research is said to provide the first evidence that consolation in primates, such as hugging and stroking, can reduce stress levels after a fight.

The behaviour could indicate some level of empathy, Dr Orlaith Fraser told the British Association Science Festival.
"We can't actually say what's going on in a chimpanzee's mind; we can only deduce from their behaviour what's going on," the Liverpool John Moores University researcher said.

Dr Fraser and colleagues spent 18 months observing 22 adult chimps at Chester Zoo. They watched closely what happened immediately after the animals had a scrap - perhaps a fight over food, a mate or simply where to sit.

In about 50% of cases, the victim in the fight would be consoled by another member of the group. The soothing was always done by a valuable - or best - friend, a chimp with whom the victim would routinely play or share food. The consolation usually took the form of a kiss or embrace, a grooming session or even play.

Inner Art, DNA for your Walls

Inner Beauty, deep inside- did you ever think DNA could be beautiful- besides your outer shell and all those organic gadgets that make up your mind's home. Now its patterns have been turned into art that can decorate your four-walls home.
German creator Daniel Becker, explains "DNA art interprets the complex information of DNA with the help of symbols and colours," says the 29-year-old from Frankfurt.
"The result is a individual graphic pattern for any creature or plant.
"But for the naked eye it is not easily possible to see the difference between a human and a shark, because the information is too complex.

"I was very interested in finding a way showing this grid of confusing Gs, As Ts and Cs in a graphical way."
The result was Daniel's DNA art - and he is now finding they have become increasingly popular worldwide.
Costing just five Euros, Daniel saves the patterns into PDF format ready to be printed onto a canvass of the buyers choice.
"I am finding that people are buying a PDF of their favourite animal or plant and printing them out for their homes and offices," he says.

"Younger people are interested in the more dangerous animals and plants - for example the Great White Shark patterns are very popular with men.
"But I also find that the patterns of mice, elephants and koalas are popular amongst women.
"In general the more "strange" the subject like wild mushrooms or dangerous creatures are more popular."
And Daniel is hoping that in years to come, people will be able to use their own DNA to make their own art.

Prime Mates, BoonLua and Toby

Such a sweet story. Maybe BoonLua thinks the bun looks like himself. No long arms or legs but a cute round shape and fur and a sweet face. He may thinks he is comforting Toby the bunny and Toby just loves his new friend.

CUTE pictures emerged yesterday of an unlikely combination - a one-armed monkey and a rabbit who are best mates.
BoonLua, a long-tailed macaque, lives with Toby, a rabbit, in Thailand's Ayutthaya province about 80km north of Bangkok.
BoonLua, who is about six years old, was savagely attacked as a wild monkey by dogs three years ago.

He lost both legs and one arm during the mauling - but dragged himself to a nearby temple, where he received medical treatment.
He now lives in a custom built enclosure with the rabbit, Toby. Source

Utah deputies joked about deputizing a black bear after the animal raided an illegal marijuana farm so often that the growers fled. Here, an official points out claw marks in a tree.

PANGUITCH, Utah- One Utah community is cheering a special bear — but don't call him Smokey. Investigators say a large black bear raided a clandestine marijuana growing operation so often that it chased the grower away.

"This bear is definitely law-enforcement minded," said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins. "If I can find this bear I'm going to deputize him."
Deputies found food containers ripped apart and strewn everywhere, cans with bear teeth marks, claw marks and bear prints across the Garfield County camp on Tuesday.
Perkins said the operation on Boulder Mountain included 4,000 "starter" sacks of pot and 888 young plants.
"This particular bear apparently was not going to give up and basically chased these marijuana farmers away," Perkins said. "Our county is so tough on drugs that even the wildlife are getting in on the action." Source
