Man saves owl snared by trap for gophers
by Bob Grawey Staff writer
When Tony Schreiber of Otsego woke up Tuesday morning, he never expected to play the role of hero for a great horned owl.
But that is exactly what happened Aug. 5 at his 74th Street residence.
Schreiber says he got up to get ready for work around 6:15 to 6:30 a.m., and when he walked into his kitchen he noticed movement in his backyard. It looked like a big bird flopping around, he says.
As the Otsego man went outside to have a closer look, the bird immediately flew to a vacant lot next door.
But Schreiber saw it was a great horned owl that appeared injured.
Since he owns a landscape company, Schreiber needed to go to work and get his crews sent out to that day’s assignments.
Once that was done, he returned home to find the injured owl on his sidewalk. That is when he discovered what was wrong with the bird.
“I saw then that he had a gopher trap on both his feet,” Schreiber says, “so I called the Raptor Center.”
The center for injured birds and wildlife, however, did not respond to Schreiber’s attempts to use an emergency line to report injured eagles, hawks or owls.
“A recording said my call would be returned in 12 to 24 hours,” Schreiber says. “Well, if you would have left him for that long, he would have been dead.”
The Wright County Sheriff’s Department was then called.
Together, the two men cornered the owl and placed a box over its head. While Schreiber held the box in place, Sheriff’s Deputy Pete Walker removed the gopher trap from the owl’s feet.
“He was a big owl. He probably had a 4.5- to 5-foot wing span and his talons must have been 3.5 inches long,” Schreiber recalls. “We were pretty focused on getting that trap off him and getting out of the way. He took right off.”
