The Dakota, right now

The best thing, I think, is to remember the beauty of life and what great people like John Lennon added to it. So when I see The Dakota I tell myself to smile because of the great man who lived there and was traveling this life with us for awhile.

Remembering the Veteran War Dogs too

Many animals fought and still serve alongside soldiers now. Keep them in your thoughts today too. They are just as brave as the men and women who defend us all over the world.

Storybook Wolf and the Fierce Kitty

The top prize winner in one of the most stunning photography competitions and then my personal favorite entry...

Winner of the prestigious Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 award

The image of a photographer's dreams
Mr Rodriguez won the Animal Portraits category and went on to win the top prize with this haunting image that the judges said captured the character of the wolf.

He hopes that his picture, "showing the wolf's great agility and strength", will become an image that can be used to show just how beautiful the Iberian wolf is and how the Spanish can be proud to have such an emblematic animal.

Winner of the Urban and Garden Wildlife category

Ryska the cat fiercely guarded her property
"The cat was really jealous about me. If I started to look at the animals she would attack them. Just like woman," he smiled.

"Maybe she thought I was her pet."

But the animals were curious about the area's new residents, and drawn by cooking smells from the cabin. The foxes in particular would visit every day. "When they came within 20m, that was her boundary and chased them. It was really funny - foxes were climbing trees to get away from the cat."

Denver's Angel, Cancer survivor, 9, funds support dog for 2-year-old

You will cry but happy tears. Children should never be underestimated, and a lot, A LOT, of adults could learn a lesson about what is important on this floating pebble in space.

Cancer survivor, 9, funds support dog for 2-year-old
By Kirk Mitchell, The Denver Post
"After two years of surgery, chemotherapy and treatment for a brain tumor, 9-year-old Allison Winn wanted other kids with cancer to have a companion like her dog, Coco.

"She made me feel better," Allison said.

So when she regained her strength at the end of spring, Allison embarked on a fundraising campaign of her own invention to pay for feeding and training companion dogs for kids like her.

On Tuesday, in the lobby of the women's prison where Coco and the new dog were trained, she watched quietly, but intently, as 2-year-old cancer survivor Krysta Hubbard caressed the nose of Lucky Bug, a gentle black Labrador. Krysta affectionately called him "Puppy."

She has also raised enough money to buy two more dogs and hopes to start a dog biscuit fundraising company.

Please read her story and log on to her YT channel and pass this information along. You never know who may be out there that will see her brave story and be given new hope for a normal life.

""Unfortunately, there are so many patients right now that are undiagnosed and terrified," she said. "At its worst, it feels like you're dying, even though you look fine on the outside. It's an invisible disease. My hope is that through my YouTube channel, I can save a lot of people from the heartbreak I went through when I was undiagnosed and being told by doctors, 'You're perfectly fine. You can go home,' when my parents had to wheel me out of the hospital and carry me into bed." Kyli Wolfson in her interview with Scott Cronick Read the entire article here.

A Life-sized Candyland

Yesterday an entire street turned into a real life Candyland! Lombard Street (you know that famous twisty turny one in San Francisco) got turned into a life sized version of the famous kid's boardgame.

To celebrate Candy Land's 60th anniversary, 575 feet of switchbacks in the Russian Hill neighborhood were transformed into a life-size version of the board game.

Kids from the UC San Francisco Children's Hospital and Friends of the Children competed in a round of Candy Land, which makes my girlhood fantasyland, FAO Schwarz, look like child's play.

Click here for all the info and a picture of the cute cake the kids got at the end of the game :)

Lost and Found Dog Saves Life of Boy with Down Syndrome

Another "paws" needed in the day for this story. Don't EVEN pretend you did not get tears in your eyes :) Thanks Rick for the happy tears! :)
A lost and then found dog finds his true place in the world.

"Segovia and Savige made 4,000 FOUND flyers with the dog's picture, stuffed mailboxes and put an ad on Craigslist. When no one called, RaeLee stayed the night at the Segovias' house. His dog bed was placed in the living room, but when the boys climbed into their twin beds, RaeLee dragged his bed down the long hallway and bunked with the boys in their room.

By Saturday -- four days later -- no one had called to claim RaeLee, and he was still living with the Segovias. The honey-colored terrier had started responding to his new name. He almost never barked, loved playing rambunctiously with Azaiah, and was tender with Christian.

One afternoon, the dog settled himself on the floor near Christian as he watched a "Barney" video in his room. Segovia was outside watering the plants when the placid moment was shattered by the sound of RaeLee crashing into the screen door and barking crazily. Alarmed, Segovia opened the door, only to have the dog race back through the house towards the boys' room. Segovia followed, screaming when she caught sight of her son. Christian was "slumped over, his body writhing in a seizure, blood streaming from his nose and mouth." RaeLee stood next to him yelping, but suddenly went quiet when Yolanda reached down to hold her son.

"If he hadn't come to get me," Segovia said, "the neurologist said Christian would have choked on his own blood and died." The dog, she decided, was a keeper.

But the next day, Segovia and her sons were heartbroken when someone called to claim the dog they had come to love. "

Drowning Diver Saved by Beluga Whale

Mila the Beluga

More proof of the amazing nature of the creatures we share this earth with- we humans think we are such smarties and yet, Mila, the whale noticed the girl diver in trouble first. Luckily we don't have to wonder how long and at what price her safety it would have taken for one of us humans to notice, Mila didn't just happen to accidentally bump her, she swam to the rescue. Thank you Mila. I hope to be as good a human as you are a whale and always notice and come to help when I can :)

Amazing rescue: Drowning diver saved by beluga whale
A beluga whale in a Chinese aquarium has rescued a drowning diver by pushing her out of the water.

A spokesman for Harbin Polar Land in the country's north-east Heilongjiang province said the diver had been taking part in a competition at the aquarium when she began suffering sudden cramps in her legs. Entrants were required to dive into the 6-metre-deep cool pool without any breathing equipment. The person who dives the deepest and stays down for the longest time wins the competition.

Yang Yun, an applicant from a local Chinese Medicine College, dived to a depth of 4 metres on her first trial.
"Maybe I was too nervous, and my legs had sudden cramps," she explained. "I never dive into the water so deep and so cold. I was so nervous then.
"When I was choking with water and plummeting to the bottom, a sudden force pushed me out of the water," said Yang, who swam to the bank and was rescued by other competitors.
An activity organiser said the beluga, Mila, is very familiar with humans and she spotted the problem first.
"We didn't notice the problem until we saw Mila holding the diver's leg with her mouth and pushing her out of the water," said the organiser.
Yang Yun thanked the audience and Mila by diving into the tank again after making a full recovery.

And more here!

(I am still at work on my project and since I am just one wee human I can't be all the places I want to at once but there is an end in sight then back to normal and with a nice thing to share in the future. I have wanted to "have something done" like this for a long time but just decided that to have it happen I would have to do it myself so that's what I am doing for better or worse, I am making it happen! Also Rick is saving my moments of "oh no it's ruined!" many times so he has been doing more than helping too! So thanks to everyone for understanding my awayness and it is just temporary. Hope you have been having wonderful summers or winters depending on what end of the planet you live. See you soon!)
