Storybook Wolf and the Fierce Kitty

The top prize winner in one of the most stunning photography competitions and then my personal favorite entry...

Winner of the prestigious Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 award

The image of a photographer's dreams
Mr Rodriguez won the Animal Portraits category and went on to win the top prize with this haunting image that the judges said captured the character of the wolf.

He hopes that his picture, "showing the wolf's great agility and strength", will become an image that can be used to show just how beautiful the Iberian wolf is and how the Spanish can be proud to have such an emblematic animal.

Winner of the Urban and Garden Wildlife category

Ryska the cat fiercely guarded her property
"The cat was really jealous about me. If I started to look at the animals she would attack them. Just like woman," he smiled.

"Maybe she thought I was her pet."

But the animals were curious about the area's new residents, and drawn by cooking smells from the cabin. The foxes in particular would visit every day. "When they came within 20m, that was her boundary and chased them. It was really funny - foxes were climbing trees to get away from the cat."

Spooky Saturday, Another Baby Aye-Aye!

Welcome to the world spooky little baby! So nice when new members of an endangered species join us- we don't want you to disappear! Wishing you to stay healthy, happy and to thrive!

"The baby aye-aye shown here was born April 18 at the Denver Zoo. The aye-aye is a rare endangered primate found in Madagascar. This newborn's birth is significant because it is only the second aye-aye born in a North American zoo and the first to be conceived at a North American zoo."

A New Little Red Riding Hood

I'm a little tempted to say beware, but we all know the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. You probably had it read to you as a child before you drifted off to sleep, which when you think about it is creepy. Here's a great video for the grown-up fans of LRRH. The creator Tomas Nilsson calls it a
"School assignment to reinterpret the
fairytale Little Red Riding Hood."

You can also see it as building the tale or dissecting its elements. Any way you look at it, it's great (and danceable!)

Prime Mates, BoonLua and Toby

Such a sweet story. Maybe BoonLua thinks the bun looks like himself. No long arms or legs but a cute round shape and fur and a sweet face. He may thinks he is comforting Toby the bunny and Toby just loves his new friend.

One-armed monkey BoonLua & best mate Toby the rabbit
CUTE pictures emerged yesterday of an unlikely combination - a one-armed monkey and a rabbit who are best mates.
BoonLua, a long-tailed macaque, lives with Toby, a rabbit, in Thailand's Ayutthaya province about 80km north of Bangkok.
BoonLua, who is about six years old, was savagely attacked as a wild monkey by dogs three years ago.

He lost both legs and one arm during the mauling - but dragged himself to a nearby temple, where he received medical treatment.
He now lives in a custom built enclosure with the rabbit, Toby. Source

Deputy Bear

That's a good bear! Chasing out the criminals. :)
Bear 1, Drug Dealers 0

A deputy points at claw marks on a tree. Garfield County Sheriffs Department
Utah deputies joked about deputizing a black bear after the animal raided an illegal marijuana farm so often that the growers fled. Here, an official points out claw marks in a tree.

Black Bear Sends Pot Farmers Packing AP
PANGUITCH, Utah- One Utah community is cheering a special bear — but don't call him Smokey. Investigators say a large black bear raided a clandestine marijuana growing operation so often that it chased the grower away.

"This bear is definitely law-enforcement minded," said Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins. "If I can find this bear I'm going to deputize him."
Deputies found food containers ripped apart and strewn everywhere, cans with bear teeth marks, claw marks and bear prints across the Garfield County camp on Tuesday.
Perkins said the operation on Boulder Mountain included 4,000 "starter" sacks of pot and 888 young plants.
"This particular bear apparently was not going to give up and basically chased these marijuana farmers away," Perkins said. "Our county is so tough on drugs that even the wildlife are getting in on the action." Source

How to Hug a Baby, Illustrated

Yes I know you people know how to hug babies, this is for your Biiiiig Doggies. A helpful guide for them when approaching a babe they would like to hug and probably lick too.. This pooch obviously knows what he is doing so have your pups practice a bit on you before attempting the real thing and always supervise carefully, you know how those babies love to drool! :) Source

"If you think you've spotted a baby, verify by employing classic sniffing techniques. Baby powder is a dead giveaway."

"Flatten the baby before actually beginning the hugging process."

"Simply slide paws around baby and prepare for possible close-up."

"If a camera is present, you will need to execute the difficult and patented hug, smile, and lean in order to achieve the best photo quality."

The Body Building Beautiful

A kind of body building that involves glass and steel not flesh and bone although it does teach you all about that too.. It's a beautiful big work of architectural art.

"If ever the word ‘Body’ and ‘Building’ were gelled together in a geeky sense other than the conventional physique development, this is it. Hailing from the Netherlands, this unique structure indeed gels those words in a manner never heard off before. Dubbed the CORPUS, this mammoth (35 meter high) building startles the gazer by revealing a transparent building clad with in a human body structure. If any of you plan to visit the country, make sure that you explore this structure located on the A44 highway that connects Hague and Amsterdam."

Aye Aye it's Spooky Saturday!

A new baby Aye Aye has been born. They may look spooky but they are really wonderful creatures. They are endangered so need help to come back in the world and one more adorable spooky baby Aye Aye is great news.

Meet Baby Ichabod! Thanks to Duke's Lemur Center for the great info!

Awesome Ichabod
"Duke University's Lemur Center is proud to announce the birth of their second Aye-Aye baby to captive-bred parents. Ichabod arrived July 23 and is thriving ... noisily.

Not only are these nocturnal bug-eaters exceedingly rare and threatened, their captive-bred parents weren't too well versed on how to make babies. It took DLC Assistant Director Dean Gibson more than two years of coaching and coaxing to get Ichabod's dad, Merlin, to do his stuff. But man, he gets it now!"
Read about him here and hear his cute little voice, read the entire article about him here!

Watch how the Aye Aye gets his grub dinner from the trees!
