The Insect's Christmas, 1913 Stop Motion Animation

The good folks of XmasFlix, a wonderful blog of vintage Christmas films, have restored this beautiful animated masterpiece.

"This fascinating stop motion animated film was produced by the Khanzhonkov Company, Moscow Russia in 1913 .
Due to the quality of film I had to work with, it is fully intact, however, the textual elements were removed... A silent film, but I replaced the cutaway titles with overlay. I kept the same dialogue as it's original lower quality version. I enhanced the image and it became a wonderful dreamlike state. Since there was no audio, I created a layered audio effect with elements from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.
"

Watch this and many other oldies and goodies on their YouTube Channel too.

Spooky Saturday, I'm a Lubber, Not a Fighter

"While print designer Mary Katrantzou's Fall 2009 collection may have been inspired by vintage perfume bottles, I couldn't help but notice it's similarities to the Lubber Grasshopper, the most distinctive grasshopper species in the southeastern United States." Click picture for the complete post and photos.

When I first saw this beautiful post on Trend de la Creme, I thought the inspiration was insectile too. Bugs, though we stomp them, are gorgeous little machines.
Now if I could have only typed this post in the Insectile Font, it would have been truly buggy.

"Insectile" by P22 Type Foundry
"Insectile's font, Infestia, made up of actual scanned and rearranged insect parts."

Follow the Penguin

Click the video for a story about a Penguin, a Beauty Queen and her search for a Crownfish. It's a commercial for Samsung, but seems to be selling only an imaginative mind.. strangely spooky and cool.

Famous bugs: Some of the most charming characters in movies and books are insects
By Lisa Davis, McClatchy Newspapers
OK, OK, the robots are super-cool, but there is an overlooked star of the movie ``WALL-E,'' a character who is loyal, brave and charming.

It's the cockroach.
WALL-E's pet roach, his only companion on a wasted Earth, lives in a Twinkie, loves to give tickles, survives innumerable squishings and waits patiently for WALL-E to return from outer space. Who knew a cockroach could be so cute?

It put us in mind of some other lovable bugs in pop culture. If you don't think insects can be lovable, well, grasshopper, you have much to learn.
Have some fun exploring these fictional bugs _ and real-life ones, too!
